Dean Smith is an Australian ceramic artist and potter creating contemporary, highly refined wheel-thrown vessels from porcelain and stoneware clay. Dean treats the surface with combinations of crystalline glazes, metallic glazes and lustres – a finish of striking contrasts. Dean has a visual interest in Industrial aesthetics, chaos/order, and geometry in nature such as crystal forms – these elements are retranslated as unusual embellishments on his vessel forms.
I find the visual qualities of rocks and gems fascinating – the chaotic and ordered structures embedded within them. I like to transfer these qualities into the vessels directly, using extruded clay – sheared, fractured and shaped – adding contrast and depth to my forms. The rich glazes further convey the elemental properties of rocks and the unexpected gifts they produce. Dean Smith
